Save - Protect - Comfort

benefits of loft insulation

Loft insulation is a simple yet effective upgrade for your home. By trapping heat in your loft with materials like fibreglass, it keeps your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer, cutting down your energy bills. Not only does it save money, but it also makes your home more eco-friendly by reducing carbon emissions. Plus, it’s a smart investment that could increase your property’s value and enhance indoor comfort.

Reduced Energy Costs

Loft insulation significantly lowers your heating and cooling bills by maintaining a consistent indoor temperature.

Environmental Impact

By reducing the need for excessive heating and cooling, loft insulation helps in cutting down your home's carbon footprint.

Enhanced Home Comfort

Insulating your loft leads to a more comfortable living environment by stabilising temperature and reducing outside noise.

Obligated - Funded - Needed

how can this be free?

The Government-backed Energy Company Obligation scheme (ECO4) is open to homeowners, tenants, and landlords, offering a chance to receive multiple free energy-saving upgrades. This initiative is part of the UK’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact, as outlined in the Climate Change Act 2008. Funded by major energy companies, ECO4 aims to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through various home improvements. The scheme focuses on supporting low-income households and those in less energy-efficient homes, ensuring that the benefits of energy-saving measures are accessible to those who need them most.

Government's Legal Obligations

The UK's net zero commitment under the Climate Change Act 2008 legally mandates significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, underpinning schemes like ECO4.

Funded by Energy Companies

ECO4 is backed by major energy suppliers, fulfilling their obligation to support the UK's climate goals, enabling them to provide free energy-saving upgrades to households.

Helping Homes in Need

ECO4 primarily targets vulnerable and low-income households, ensuring those who need it most benefit from energy-efficient improvements, aligning with the UK's commitment to both environmental sustainability and social welfare.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a government scheme in the UK designed to improve energy efficiency in homes, particularly for those considered in fuel poverty. It’s the fourth iteration of the ECO scheme and runs until March 2026. ECO4 places an obligation on medium and large energy suppliers to promote measures that reduce energy usage, like installing insulation or upgrading heating systems.

The scheme is funded by energy suppliers. Suppliers are required to support low-income, fuel-poor, and vulnerable households in heating their homes more efficiently, which includes providing free upgrades like solar, heating systems and insulation.

There are two parts to eligibility for ECO4.

Firstly, households (homeowners and private tenants) must have someone living in the property receiving certain benefits, living with an illness made worse by the cold, or you can still qualify if your household income is £31,000 or less a year.

Secondly, along with the above, the property also needs to have an EPC of an “E” or below to qualify for ECO4 and free upgrades.

  1. Check Eligibility: Complete a form to see if you are eligible.
  2. Site Visit: A surveyor will visit your home for an assessment.
  3. Installation: If eligible, the installer will install your energy-saving measures for free.

Yes, both private tenants and homeowners can access free upgrades through the ECO4 scheme. This initiative is designed for all types of households, including rentals. However, you’ll need permission from your landlord for any installations.

The scheme is open to social housing and council tenants but you will need to enquire with your property’s manager about this.

Yes, as a homeowner, you are eligible for free upgrades under the ECO4 scheme. This program is designed to help various types of households, including those owned by residents, to become more energy-efficient. If you meet the eligibility criteria, which often include factors like income and current home energy efficiency, you can benefit from energy-saving improvements at no cost. To start the process, you’ll need to check your eligibility and apply through the scheme.

Yes, the ECO4 scheme can assist landlords in upgrading their properties to meet the upcoming Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES). From April 2025, new tenancies in the UK will require rental properties to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C or higher, extending to all tenancies by April 2028. The ECO4 scheme provides funding for energy-efficient upgrades, such as insulation or heating system improvements, which can help in raising your property’s EPC rating. While this scheme is a helpful resource, landlords may need to invest further to meet the new EPC requirements.

Yes, as a social housing or council tenant, you can still qualify for free upgrades under the ECO4 scheme. However, it’s important for you to contact your property manager or the housing association that manages your property. They will guide you on how to apply for the scheme and what upgrades are available for your home. It’s their responsibility to initiate and oversee the upgrade process in social housing properties.

Loft insulation involves adding insulating materials like fibreglass or mineral wool to your attic or roof space. This process helps to retain heat in your home, reducing heat loss through the roof and improving energy efficiency.

Loft insulation offers the dual benefits of significantly reducing your energy bills and enhancing the comfort of your home. It also plays a vital role in decreasing environmental impact by lowering carbon emissions and reducing the need for excessive heating and cooling.
